June’s here and back to school in droves once again students and school children, plenty of them are first time. And will it be back to God for them, too?

The return to school work reminds me the fact that the soul of education is the education of the soul. Education concerned only with the improvement of the intellect or with the acquisition of skills is not enough. True education should not only help us to learn a living but also how to live.

Is it a task of schools to develop or instill values in students? What are schools trying to instill or develop in students? And have the schools been successful in tier efforts? Plenty of questions come out to my mind. My pupil in their school study Christian living for they are in a catholic schools but learning to mouth the standard prayers and the basic church dogmas by itself does not ensure integrity of character. Most of us have lack of self discipline, we realized with despair the cancer of corruption that eats at our souls, high or low, rich or poor.

Why the failures of the schools in developing morally clean, honest students despite the teaching of Christian living in schools? In my own observation, or a partly explain the reason of this failure. Families are raised more on the tradition of our religions rather than on the truth of God’s Word. In other words, values based on or interpreted according to religious traditions or beliefs of men are given more emphasis, importance or respect. Sometimes the God’s worlds are simply neglected and this could be the reasons for the failure of any efforts at the so called moral recovery or the formation of true values.

As school days begin may we all thus to realize that education without the knowledge of God and his word is worthless. The return of school work should challenge and encourage all of us parents and so with the teachers to engage our self in diligent study of God’s Word so that we set truly from ignorance, moral corruption and decay and from shame.
