Effective Time Management

Time is an inelastic resource. We cannot stretch it out. It appears to exist in unlimited quantities in the future for it means delay. Time management perhaps more than anything, is the one thing we need to learn.

In order to attain time management we need to consider these:

Start early – Many personal time problems can be minimize by beginning the work day a few minutes early.

Decide quickly on small things – Most problems do not require a lot of time for a decision. A prompt ‘yes’ or ‘ no’ saves time since it always allows us to dispose of the matter without having to return to it later.

Find out where your time goes – We can do this in any of the three ways;
1. We can make an activity time analysis, the most systematic and thorough approach.
2. We can keep a daily log of our activities, the simple approach
3. We can ‘sample’ our time using an easy short cut.

Minimize our time commitments – Smart people don’t take on more than they can comfortably handle. They avoid over commitment, especially the kind of deadline traps. We too should try to limit our activities to those that fit in with the goals and the daily agenda.

Sort out what need to be done now from what can wait until later – Not everything need to be done today. Nevertheless we don’t want to set aside important, urgent matters. We cannot make appropriate determinations through prioritizing to separate the vital few demands upon our time from trivial many.

Schedule our routine – make it a habit to write down the important things we will do in a day. Set the time.

Relax - Human are not machines that can do all tasks without a break. Few successful individuals are in command of their time. We must not submit to the will of time, as consequences, we will fail to attain our potential. Those who succumb to time misunderstand the essential features of its power.
